Sonic Gift Card Balance: How to Check It Safely

Three free ways to see what is left on your card, what you need off the back of it, and why so many of the "balance checker" pages above this one are worth closing.

The short answer

Check it on Sonic's own gift card page, in the Sonic app, or by asking at any drive-in. All three are free and all three need the same thing: the card number and the PIN, both printed on the back.

Sonic's card terms state the card never expires and has no fees, so an old one from a drawer is still worth its full balance.

Three ways to check the balance

Ranked by how much trouble they save you later, rather than by how fast they are right now.

1

Add it to the Sonic appBest

The one worth doing once. The card lives in your account afterwards, the balance is visible every time you open the app, and it applies itself at checkout. You never look it up again.

2

Sonic's own website

Go to sonicdrivein.com/gift-cards and enter the card number and the four digit PIN. This is the right site to type those numbers into, and it is the only website on this page we would tell you to type them into.

3

Ask at the drive-in

Hand the card over and ask. It needs no website, no app and no typing your number anywhere, which makes it the safest of the three even though it means a trip.

Before you type your card number anywhere

A card number and a PIN are the two things needed to spend the card. They are not a login with a password behind them. Anyone who has both can drain the balance from anywhere, and you will not get a notification.

Search this question and a good share of the first page is third party "balance checker" sites: a form, a card number field, a PIN field, and a lot of ads. Some are simply collecting the numbers. Sonic's own site and Sonic's own app are the only two places those digits belong, and if you are ever unsure, the drive-in can read the balance off the card without you typing anything at all.

That applies to this page too. We do not have a balance checker, we do not want your card number, and there is nothing here to fill in.

Buying a Sonic gift card

At a drive-in

Ask at the stall. Physical cards are commonly sold in $5, $10, $25, $50 and $100 amounts, though what is in the rack varies by location.

From Sonic online

Sonic sells both physical cards and eGift cards from its own site. An eGift arrives by email and is redeemed in the app rather than handed over at a stall.

Resale sites

Third party marketplaces list them below face value. Treat that the way you would any resold card: the discount is real, and so is the risk that the balance is not what the listing says.

What the balance actually buys

Real prices from Sonic's own store level data, so you can work out whether the card covers the order before you get to the stall.

A $10 card covers most two item orders. The menu under $1.99 stretches it furthest, and Happy Hour, 2 PM to 4 PM halves every drink on it. Everything is on the full menu.

Sonic gift cards, answered

How do I check my Sonic gift card balance?

Three ways, all free. Enter the card number and PIN on Sonic's own gift card page at sonicdrivein.com/gift-cards; add the card in the Sonic app, which then keeps the balance in your account so you never have to look it up again; or hand it to the crew at any drive-in and ask. The app is the one worth doing once, because it saves doing the other two ever again.

What do I need to check the balance?

The card number and the PIN, both on the back. The PIN is usually under a panel you scratch off. Without it no checker of any kind can help you, which is also why a site asking for the number without the PIN is not doing what it claims.

Is there a phone number for Sonic gift card balances?

There is, and it is printed on the back of your card. We deliberately do not reprint one here: more than one number circulates on pages covering this, we could not confirm which is current, and a wrong number on a page about card security would be worse than no number. Read it off the card, or use the website or the app instead.

Do Sonic gift cards expire?

No. Sonic's card terms state the card never expires and carries no fees, so a card found in a drawer years later is still worth what is on it. That is not true of every brand, so it is worth knowing.

Can I use a Sonic gift card in the app?

Yes, and it is the most useful place to put it. Adding the card to your Sonic account means the balance shows every time you open the app and applies itself at checkout. eGift cards are the other way round: those are redeemed through the app for online orders rather than handed over at a stall.

Can I get cash back from a Sonic gift card?

No. Sonic's terms say the card is not redeemable for cash or refundable unless a state law requires it, and it cannot be used to buy another gift card. What is on it gets spent on food and drink.

Where can I buy a Sonic gift card?

From Sonic directly, online or at a drive-in. Physical cards are commonly sold in $5, $10, $25, $50 and $100 amounts, and eGift cards are sent by email. Third party resale sites also list them at a discount, which is worth treating with the same caution as any resold card: you are trusting a stranger that the balance is really there.

Where to go next

Sonic Menu Guide is independent and not affiliated with Sonic Drive-In. We cannot look up, reload or replace a gift card, and we will never ask for your card number. For anything to do with the card itself, use Sonic's own gift card page.
